How hospitality, food culture and residential warmth can reshape a technical workplace.

Workplaces built around food have an interesting design challenge. They need to support the technical realities of testing, development and production, while also creating environments where people can gather, exchange ideas, present products and connect.

This independent concept study began with a question: What if a food innovation workplace borrowed less from the traditional office or laboratory and more from the places where people naturally gather around food?

The inspiration came from English kitchen gardens, conservatories, farm shops and communal food spaces—environments characterized by warmth, authenticity, craftsmanship and an inherent connection between food and gathering. Rather than recreating those environments literally, the concept translates those qualities through a more contemporary language of Nordic restraint and light industrial infrastructure.

The result is a workplace concept built around a simple idea: technical performance and hospitality do not have to be opposing forces.

At the heart of that idea is the test kitchen.

The Test Kitchen as the Heart of the Workplace

Rather than treating the test kitchen as back-of-house infrastructure, the concept positions it as a visible, hospitality-driven hub for testing, tasting, demonstration and collaboration.

The design intentionally softens the visual language of a commercial kitchen without compromising performance. Natural oak millwork, open shelving, warm mineral finishes and a statement plaster or metal hood introduce a more residential character, while integrated stainless-steel appliances and durable work surfaces support the practical demands of a working food innovation environment.

A generous central island becomes both a functional work surface and a gathering point, allowing product development, presentation and conversation to happen within the same space.

The result is a kitchen that feels approachable rather than industrial, while remaining highly functional.

Residential in appearance. Commercial in performance.
